In the late 19th century, two societies are balancing on the edge of war—the technologically advanced Trevians and the less advantaged Saverians. Fifty years before, the Trevians developed the corona field, an immensely powerful bomb powered by scorching halcia particles, leveling cities in their battles for territory against the Saverian race. They won a decisive victory, relegating the remaining Saverians into small regions and setting the stage for their own economic prosperity.
Now, travellers of both races are able to take to the skies as well as the sea in vast, impressive ships that move across the world faster than anyone could have ever imagined. Trade between countries is much easier, which makes communication become faster.
Through the use of halcia, medical treatment has improved greatly as well. Those who have trained themselves in the healing arts make brilliant doctors and are able to heal wounds that would have previously taken weeks to months in mere minutes. Alas, such treatments are often very expensive, which makes it much harder for people of lower-classes to acquire them.
Rumours have started circulating that the Trevian Military has started a new form of experiments--human experiments. Saverian and Trevian babies are supposedly being taken at birth and experimented on throughout their lives while receiving intensive training to create a race of "Ultimate Human Weapons." People who are immune to pain, function in even the most stressful situations, and are experts with both magic and firearms, but all the known experiments attempted thus-far have failed... except one. Unfortunately, no one knows where the missing experiment is, or if it was actually a failure in the end; the search is still going for both races. After all, whoever holds the ultimate human weapon is almost guaranteed to win the war, right?
To make matters worse, the Trevians are facing the consequences of their show of might. They are running out of coal and other resources, and as it so happens that the Saverians’ current homelands have some rich mines, they have turned their attention back to their old enemies. But times have changed since the previous war, and seeing the devastation the corona and their other best weapons have left on the environment, many are not so keen on starting the fight again. They would rather avert war and try to come to an agreement with the Saverians—even while others are convinced such cooperation is impossible.

The Trevians owe much of their early economic success to their being mostly naturally ‘tuned.’ The Saverians tend to have little to no natural halcia-concentration capability and require focani (singular: focanus), small devices consisting of a magnetic stone and some associated wiring that are implanted into the shoulder or the back of the lower arm. These devices facilitate the concentration and passage of halcia through the body and have about a three-year functional period before they wear out—shorter if the user is doing quite a bit of daily usage.
The Trevians have a virtual monopoly on the focani trade, though a number of black markets do exist. Saverians are also not the only ones who have themselves implanted with focani—some Trevians, particularly soldiers, do as well as a quick and easy way to increase their power.
Halcia technology exists in conjunction with steam technology. Halcia is commonly used to power lights, heaters, and a form of air conditioning in Trevian towns, has received recent application in engines, and is used in various medical devices. The infamous corona field consists of an oversized, precisely cut focanus core, a number of smaller cores and wires for additional concentrating capacity, and a clockwork timer.
